"What's Next?" with Rich Luker

Rich Luker has been studying American Life for more than 25 years. He is best known for his creation of the ESPN Sports Poll which began in 1994. The Sports Poll was the first dedicated ongoing intelligence service to collect information from Americans on their interests and activities related to sports.

Luker's research in 1999 identified a dominant sense of loss of community felt by most Americans. His study of American social development led Rich to believe being a service-based economy, coupled with an increasing role of communication technology, led to less face-to-face interaction between family, friends and neighbors. Luker began to develop strategies to reinvigorate American community in 2001. The most successful to date is the NCAA Division II strategy highlighted at www.DIICommunity.org.

In 2009, Luker published Simple Community which documents the loss of American community and provides a way for American brands to profitably invest in restoring community.

Dr. Luker's research has been featured in many national publications including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, and Advertising Age. Luker has appeared on national news programs on ABC, FOX, ESPN, and NPR. Recognizing Luker's two decades of forward thinking research, in 2009 Sports Business Journal asked him to write a full page quarterly column on trends called "Up Next". The column presents Luker's latest trend research, tracks key statistics and polls industry leaders on the issues most affecting the sports industry.

"Using Your Leadership Skills in Retirement" with Liane and Dave Phillips

Helping the low-skilled unemployed seek, obtain and hold a job is among the most difficult social-services challenges in the country. And when Liane and Dave Phillips retired from their first careers they set out to change that by founding Cincinnati Works (CW). CW has never sought or accepted government funding of any kind; it is supported by individuals, foundations, and United Way of Greater Cincinnati. Moreover, founders Dave and Liane Phillips measure success not by the number of job placements but by the percentage of CW “members” who stay in the workforce for at least one year. “Our industry believes that they are in the placement business, whereas we believe that we are in the eliminating of poverty business,” says Dave Phillips.

CW serves two segments of the population: those who are currently unemployed and those who are underemployed (often termed “the working poor”). The short-term goal for the unemployed is to help them stabilize in a job that pays $7-$10 per hour with health benefits. The longterm goal for the underemployed is for them to earn 200 percent of the federal poverty rate and move to economic self-sufficiency. Economically self sufficient people become taxpayers and productive citizens who no longer require public assistance.

The Phillipses view the habits of the culture of poverty—chronic tardiness, lack of planning and failure to look interviewers in the eye—as at odds with long-term self-sufficiency. “If you have a person with a barrier to work,” says Dave Phillips, “and you don’t assist him in dealing with that barrier, he will not stay working.” The CW program model helps members acquire good work habits and prepare to meet an employer’s basic expectations.

CW provides its members ongoing help with legal problems, child care, and transportation. In the thirteen years since its founding, CW has been scrupulous about tracking not just results but also costs per client, perhaps reflecting Dave’s background with a major international accounting firm. The results are impressive. Since 2004, over 80 percent of those placed in jobs have stayed in the labor force for at least one year. At the same time, CW’s costs have steadily declined. In 1996, the average cost per placement was almost $2,000. By 2008, that figure had declined to less than $1,100.

Cincinnati Works has also made a conscious—and successful—effort to include low-income males in its “membership.” Although its ranks were virtually all female at the outset, they are now 40 percent male, a percentage mirroring the demography of poverty in the city. In addition to its staff of thirteen, CW makes use of a wide range of volunteers, including twenty-three trustees on its board, twelve legal advisory committee members, twelve employer visionary committee members, thirteen fundraising advisory committee members, fifteen mentors, thirty interviewers, and an office assistant.

Cincinnati Works combines an original approach to an endemic social problem, careful monitoring of results in a way that furthers its goals, and an aversion to government funds as a means to ensure continued independence.

Liane and Dave were the 2009 recipient of the Manhattan Institute's Social Entrepreneurship Award.

A system dominated by politics-as-usual, but woefully lacking in accountability... More
